Positive Ions
Ever notice how being out in nature makes you feel good? You may have heard of the practice of grounding or earthing, but have you ever stopped to consider how it works? There’s a scientific explanation for why grounding is so good for us. It all has to do with the balance of energy in our cells.

WHY WE NEED TO GROUND
Our bodies are incredibly efficient at filtering out toxins. Still, since the start of the industrial revolution, we have seen a massive increase in the toxic chemicals and pollutants we are exposed to daily. According to the Environmental Working Group (“EWG”), “women put an average of 168 chemicals on their body each day.” EWG says that “men use fewer products but still put 85 chemicals on their body” daily. Our bodies struggle to filter out that many chemicals. These chemicals overload our system, lowering our resonant frequency and resulting in disease.
Grounding our energy is extremely important to our well-being. Our root or base chakra is the foundation of our energetic system and is where we experience grounding. When the base chakra is grounded and its energy is flowing freely, you will experience feelings of safety, security, and stability.
If we don’t ground our energy, our cells get overloaded with too much charge, which can cause significant energetic imbalances in our systems. Symptoms of not being grounded include poor sleep, fatigue, anxiety, inability to concentrate, depression, overthinking, headaches, nausea, migraines, difficulty concentrating, vertigo, feeling scattered, uneasy, and wired yet tired.
The Science
Toxins constantly surround us. Toxic chemicals in our products, in our water, air pollutants, the electromagnetic fields from our cell phones and computers, and air conditioning units create positively charged ions (also known as free radicals). These free radicals cause aging and damage to our tissues. They circulate in our bodies, causing inflammation and disease.
Free radicals become electrically charged because the number of protons and electrons in their nucleus is unbalanced. The positively charged ion has more protons than electrons. The only way to neutralize the positive charge is by ensuring you expose yourself to a sufficient amount of negatively charged ions.
Effects of Negative Ions
The opposite charge of negative ions statically attracts the positively charged ions, attaching to them and neutralizing their charge. In our environment, negative ions stop pollutants from floating around in the air by literally grounding them (they fall to the ground or floor).
Inside our bodies, negative ions neutralize the positively charged free radicals that cause all types of health issues, balancing out our energetic system and allowing our bodies to heal themselves naturally. Negatively charged ions help detoxify our bodies from free radicals, heavy metals, air pollution, and other toxins. They are also believed to improve a whole slew of health issues, including the following:
1. Alleviating chronic pain, depression, and stress.
2. Boosting mood by increasing serotonin levels in your brain.
3. Improving joint pain, circulation, and sleep.
4. Decreasing airborne bacteria.
5. Revitalizing cell metabolism.
6. Enhancing immune system function.
7. Reducing drowsiness and increasing mental awareness by increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain.
THE BEST WAY TO GROUND
The best way to ground your energy is by getting your bare feet in contact with the earth. This is because the Earth naturally emits a massive amount of negative ions. Earthing or grounding is the most powerful antioxidant known to man.
Walking, sitting, or standing barefoot on the earth for at least 20 minutes a day is a wonderful way to ground out your energy, and feel your best.
PLACEs OUT IN NATURE THAT ARE GROUNDING
All kinds of natural phenomena create healthy negative ions that balance out our energetic systems. Negative ions are created in nature where air molecules break apart, and a transfer of electrons occurs due to moving water, air, sunlight, and radiation. So not only are these places beautiful to look at, but they are also doing amazing things for the health of our mind, body, and spirit as well. The more you get out into nature, the more balanced your energy is, and the better you feel.
See the list below for some examples of natural phenomena where a transfer of electrons occurs. These areas are fantastic for balancing and grounding your energy.
1. The Mountains
2. Waterfalls
3. The Ocean/Beach
4. Rivers/Streams
5. Dense Forests
6. Thunderstorms
7. UV Rays from the Sun (moderation is key, and don’t forget your non-toxic sunscreen (here’s the one I recommend!)
Spending a little bit of time out in nature each day (or at least a few times a week) can dramatically affect the balance of energy in our cells. Over time this balance of energy allows our bodies to heal naturally.
What About When You Can’t Get Out into Nature?
The best way to ground your energy is to walk barefoot outside for 20 – 30 minutes per day to soak up the grounding energy emitted by the earth. But sometimes we just aren’t able to get out into nature. That doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our health though.
There are many ways to ground your energy from home or at the office. Check out the Blog Post on 7 Ways to Ground Your Energy When You Can’t Get Out Into Nature for easy-to-implement techniques to ground your energy indoors.
